How to Support Your Family and Plan Ahead During Alzheimer’s Awareness Month

Have you ever wondered how to protect your loved ones if a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or dementia arises? Alzheimer’s Awareness Month is a reminder for families to review their plans and ensure that care, finances, and legal matters are in order. Planning ahead provides peace of mind and helps families in Alabama navigate the unique challenges these conditions present.

One of the most important steps is establishing durable powers of attorney. This ensures that a trusted person can make financial and legal decisions if you are no longer able to do so. In addition, health care planning tools allow you to designate someone to make medical decisions and outline your care preferences, providing clarity for your family.

Trust agreements, particularly special needs or supplemental care trusts, can also be valuable. They allow families to set aside funds for ongoing care without affecting eligibility for government benefits such as Medicaid. These tools can help ensure your loved one continues to receive the support they need while protecting their long-term financial security.

It is also important to review and update your last will and testament and beneficiary designations. Alzheimer’s and dementia can progress over time, and life changes may occur that require adjustments to your estate plan. Keeping your documents current reduces the risk of conflicts or complications for your family.

Finally, communication is essential. Discussing your estate plan and care preferences with family members helps them understand your wishes and reduces confusion during emotional times. Open dialogue is as important as the legal documents themselves in providing peace of mind.
